Not too long ago, I was able to meet up with my friend Austin and his brother Brian, one half of the creative firm Werehaus in their new office in the Hobart building.  It was an afternoon of catching up, kimchi burritos and climbing roofs of really high buildings.

2011 has been quite the year to say the least.  It’s been a year of lessons, sorrows, and even triumphs.  On a business level, Unscripted saw tremendous growth, we teamed up with our friend’s at Fully Laced to open Premium Blend SF, and even capped off the year with the launch of our new company Yamamoto Industries (more on that in a different post).  On a personal note, we’ve made made some amazing new friends, did a good deal of traveling, and found out a great deal about ourselves in the process.  It’s hard to appreciate all the things you’ve done and experienced in an entire year, much less remember.  That’s why we turn to our favorite iPhone app for the memories.  Here’s pics taken from my instagram (@roy_unsc) in the course of 2011.  Cheers to an even better 2012!

I’ve come to the realization that whether you’re a musician or an entrepreneur, everyone on their hustle has one thing in common.  We’re always thinking and doing whatever we can to further our business; perfecting our craft.  Whether it’s talking strategy at the dinner table or day dreaming about the next project, IT’s always on our mind 24/7.  It’s a blessing and a curse. I’m off to Korea for a little business and a lot of R&R. This will be my 2nd time visiting the Motherland so I’m pretty amped about it. Flying “solo-dolo” is good for you sometimes. Its good to get away from the craze, to reflect, and to plan for the better future. Plus, there’s nothing like a little “ME” time to site-see & eat good food.

Roy just got back from a month long endeavor in Korean & Japan himself, and got to enjoy the perks of flying First thanks to my sister who works for American. So i’ve been looking forward to this flight as well. Les goooo!

Waaaait a minute, wtf?? But….how….Economy Class?!

Row 53 of 55?! Oh maaaan. Either way, I can’t complain. Looking forward to this 13 hr flight in the back by the restrooms. Easy access. Gotta stay optimistic, right?

From the looks of it, I think we’re almost there. I think…

I’ve been living in SF for a bit over two years now. And ever since Arnelle put me on i’ve only gotten cuts from one place, Fresh Cuts Barbershop (Daly City). I don’t go there just because they’re the homies, but because they’re great at what they do. They take the art of grooming very seriously and I respect that. With their recent move & upgrade to a bigger location, its great to see them prosper all while doing what they love and have a passion for. Congrats to Julius & the fam @ Fresh Cuts on their recent grand opening.

This past Friday we went to support our very own FroFro along with our good friends Nina & Erica at “HeART in High Heels”, an all-female showcase hosted by 31Rax.

Female artistry is greatly valued in the art/fashion culture, and has been growing stronger in the industries that surround us. A lot has changed since the days of the “Rosie Riveter“ posters. In my opinion, females are going to eventually take over this world we live in… with that being said, here are a few shots of their work in case you missed out.

Winding down with family on a Sunday after a weekend of partying is always a great remedy. Yesterday my sister, her boyfriend, and I made the ever-so-uneventful drive to Pittsburg (East Bay) to our dad’s spot to spend the day with him. We always look forward to spending time at our pops’ spot because of the scrumptious home cooking, and of course the great company. Dad is oh so handy on the grill, and there’s always beautifully prepped platters of finger foods, coupled by fine wines. We took a trip to the driving range in the area as well, an ode to the days when my sister and I were growing up and my dad always brought us to practice our swing. I have to say too (proudly), that after years of not touching a single golf club, my sister and I still have it. We really have to do this more often, it was so relaxing.

To wrap this post, I even put together a super short video clip of my sister and I practicing our swing. Isn’t that nifty. Please excuse my sister’s unsteady hand while filming. Lol.

So my trip to Japan has come to an end. I spend my final hours doing a lot of touristy things like sight seeing, people watching, and of course EATING. It’s a bittersweet end to an amazing trip spent with family, business, networking, and self-reflection. I’m eager to get back to the great City of San Francisco that I’m so fortunate to call home and get the ball rolling. What I’ve learned on this trip, I’ll take with me for a lifetime.

Last night, Jay and I had the privilege of having an absolutely incredible dining experience at La Terrasse restaurant in the Presidio, San Francisco. Plate after beautiful plate kept coming to our table via the amazing customer service, and considering the sheer amount of food we were spoiled with, plus the variety of flavors and textures that met our tongues, it was hands down the most enjoyable, satisfying, and delicious dinner I’ve ever had. Thank you so much to Chef Monica for treating us to this stellar experience, it was truly an honor. She handpicked our appetizers and desserts herself, so we were forced to try flavors we might not have expected or ordered ourselves, and it was mind-opening. Because of her, I now have a knowledge and appreciation of flavors and spices that I wasn’t usually daring enough to try before, so she can take full credit for broadening my palate. I’m so excited to be doing a few paintings for this beautiful restaurant. It’s an amazing opportunity. Again, thank you to Chef Monica Lopez for everything. She’s currently working on updating the restaurant’s menu, and bringing a more contemporary new feel to it, and she’s doing a fantastic job. I’ve always thought that being a chef was an amazing universal art form that speaks to people of all cultures and walks of life, so I have great respect for them and I commend her for her incredible talent and skill at such a young age. Also, thank you to Chef Mike Fredsall for partaking in our night of nights.

Btw I was dumb enough to forget my camera for this, so I documented everything via Instagram. It doesn’t do the dishes real justice, but I hope it suffices. 

The decor and entire ambiance in the restaurant is beautiful. So honored to add some art to this place. Plus the outdoor terrace, which I didn’t photograph, is gorgeous.

The salad she served us was gorgeous, and not on the dinner menu! She served us a total of 4 different appetizers.

White corn soup garnished with roasted corn, fried corn silk, cotija cheese, and tarragon oil. This soup had a fantastic homey flavor and was great with the house bread.

Seared scallops on lime avocado mousse and hash browns with mango salsa and orange sauce. This was a spectacular blend of flavors and textures. The hash browns had a nice crunch, the scallops were tender, and the mango salsa and orange sauce had a great tang.

62 degree egg crusted in panko, deep fried, on fried rice vermicelli, with a soy ginger broth. This was hands down the most innovative, and one of their signature dishes. Apparently when you cook an egg at 62 degrees, it cooks the egg white, but it will never cook the yolk, and it takes about an hour.  The egg was in the middle of everything, and once it’s served to you, you break it so the yolk spreads, and it becomes this crazy delicious mixture of crunchy fried goodness, and warm egg yolk.

Bacon arugula risotto, a perfect pair to our entrees. This bowl tasted like a heavenly mixture of rice, mashed potatoes, and bacon combined.

Jay’s entree. Slow cooked wild king salmon with butternut squash, melted leeks, and duck fat roasted red potatoes. This was a beautifully plated dish (as was everything else), and regardless of how large the salmon portion was, the entire thing was so tasty.

My entree. Snake River Farms kobe flat iron steak on fennel puree, with fennel confit, wild mushrooms, orange arugula salad, and bordelaise sauce. This was easily one of the best steaks I’ve ever had, and steak is my favorite food, so that’s saying a lot. Perfectly cooked, red in the middle, crispy on the outside and I’ve never liked mushrooms so much until I had this dish.

Chocolate mousse for dessert. Soft, airy, light, and absolutely delicious.

And to wrap up our fantastic meal, a serving of the most scrumptious beignets I’ve ever had. If we weren’t SO full by the time these were served, we would have inhaled them.

Thank you again Chef Monica! You definitely made our night.

I had to post this. I recently randomly decided to google search “FroFro” to see what results came up, and to my pleasant surprise, Urban Dictionary has now officially given the term “FroFro” a semi-legitimate meaning, which I actually find rather radical. Peep the snapshot of the definition to see why. I particularly enjoy the example of the term used in context. “Oh nothing, just bein’ frofro…” LOL.
